The assembling of pieces of fur is a delicate technique that is mastered by very few craftsmen. The smaller the pieces the more difficult it becomes to stitch them. Straight sided pieces are easier to stitch than curved ones. So an assembling of small curved pieces is a most difficult assemblage. Those 8 designs are very much like papercuts or paintings in their intricacies but this came at a price in terms of the quantity of pelts needed to realize one assembling and last but not least the unsustainable quest for patience and accuracy in the gestures of the assembling crafters.

  • about laodan

laodan is a thinker and a painter who has lived in Europe, the US and China. He lives now in Beijing China from where he observes the world: observing the formation of culture, the selection of those resistant memes that make it to the next generations and how they eventually are absorbed in our longer cycle worldviews.

In other words he observes societal evolution in action and he writes and paints about what he observes.

    1. From Modernity to After-Modernity: writing about late-modernity and the emergence of what comes after modernity. In other words, based on his observation of the societal evolutionary steps during these last decades, he tries to SEE the path that our societies will engage on in the future. It  is his intellectual endeavor that parallels painting his grand project.

    2. The grand project: A work that will remain in progress as long as he can think and paint. The idea of painting something more than one work after another without much of a continuity in the narrative was hanging in his mind since some years without he ever could formalize a satisfying method for the narrative to grow naturally as in a written story.

His grand project started to take shape in his mind while he was day dreaming putting the finishing touches on a work he had spent nearly 100 hours to finish. He felt it contained like "split seconds narratives" or short dreams interrupted by awakenings but I was puzzled by the possibilities that lay open on its four sides.

He finally nailed the first chapter of his grand project after assembling 20 panels (H: 3m, W:3.6m) and then he got like a flash of consciousness into the possibility to integrate time in the narrative. The right side being the past, the present assembling being the present and the left side being the future, past and future potentially holding more than one chapter each. And thus emerged the idea of a life work or a grand project around a grand narrative.
